The basic sexual system in embryophytes are illustrated namely, monoicy and dioicy in gametophytes (haploid organisms), and monoecy and dioecy in sporophytes (diploid organisms). Triangle width is proportional to species number and absolute species numbers are shown at the tips. The haploid-dominant lineages (liverworts, mosses, and hornworts) are shown in red triangles, the diploid-dominant lineages in yellow (lycophytes, ferns), gray (gymnosperms) and blue (angiosperms) triangles.
