Our analysis of the chicken (Gallus gallus) genome project (v2.1, Washington School of Medicine, St Louis as accessed through the UCSC Genome Browser, BMC ) found that the transcription direction for the chicken SIBLING genes [DMP1, IBSP, OC116 (MEPE), and SPP1 (OPN)] as well as the conserved flanking genes (SPARCL1 and PKD2) are in each case inverted from that presented in Figure 8B of this manuscript. As presented in a 2009 BMC Evolutionary Biology manuscript, “Molecular evolution of dentin phosphoprotein among toothed and toothless animals” ( BMC ), our analysis of the order and transcriptional direction of all genes present in this gene cluster are identical to that of humans and other mammals. The single reptile analyzed, green anole (Anolis carolinensis), we found had inverted the order but not the transcriptional directions of its DSPP and DMP1 orthologs compared to all other species.
