Note: Frequencies were calculated as number of fixed variation over the number of potentially mutable sites (i.e. for AT>GC the frequency was calculated as the number of substitutions over the total number of AT nucleotides in the human/chimpanzee ancestor). For both hotspots and controls 2 kb flanking sequences were analyzed. p values for each comparison (between hotspots and each control sample) were calculated using the Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test for paired samples. The Bonferroni correction for multiple tests was applied and the maximum p value is reported.
