Grey bars illustrate the rhabdomeres of the six outer photoreceptor cells (R1 to R6) that express the broad range Rh1 and that surround two inner photoreceptor cells (R7 and R8). The ommatidium types are differentiated by distinct combinations of rhodopsin expression in the inner photoreceptor cells, as indicated by coloured bars.
