Example of a typical adaptation graph, showing three stages. Population fitness increased rapidly over the first five generations and more slowly over the next 500. This is a stochastic increase that sometimes occurs in sharp jumps in fitness, reminiscent of punctuated equilibria. After this, the population fitness varied around an equilibrium value for 500 generations.
