The values for lactate (orange), formate (blue), acetate (green) and ethanol (red) are shown. The levels of pyruvate increased in all the chemostats during the evolution experiment (b). Mean concentrations at each generation are shown by data symbol ‘X’, along with error bars representing standard deviation and a 3rd order polynomial fit solely used for the purpose of visualizing the overall trend
