Wholemount in situ hybridization indicates that Shh is expressed in a similar pattern to other amniotes along the posterior margin of the developing limb within the Zone of Polarizing Activity (ZPA) in the hands (a, c) and feet (b, d). Significantly, the expression of Shh is lost upon distal flattening of the limb bud in both the hands (e, g) and feet (f, h)
