The figure shows the two families where we found an association between body mass and latitude or temperature, and where these models explained a substantial proportion of the variation in body mass. Only the strongest predictor, out of temperature, maximum or median latitude, is shown for Geomyidae. AICc-θAICc denotes the difference in AIC between the respective adaption model and the intercept-only model, and r 2 gives the amount of variation in body mass explained by the optimal regression. Evolutionary regressions (solid lines) represent the observed relationship between the predictor and the response variable, whereas optimal regressions are adjusted for the effect of phylogenetic inertia. The optimal regression is not shown for Canidae, due to its very high half-life estimation which produced an extremely steep slope with little biological interpretability
